The local Units of LRTA serve as the “backbone” of the association. The "Unit Spotlight" series highlights the work of the local Units, including community service projects and member engagement programs.
St. Bernard Retired Teachers Association
Each year, the St. Bernard Retired Teachers Association members hold a school supply drive to collect supplies for a local elementary school in St. Bernard Parish. St. Bernard RTA President Paul Grethel was inspired by another retired teacher organization’s school supply drive and decided to implement the project with his Unit. Over the years, the school supply drive has grown. Grethel estimates the Unit has donated thousands of dollars’ worth of school supplies. Click here to read the full story.

Ascension Retired Teachers Association
We all started somewhere. Retired teachers can identify with college students studying and completing their education to become teachers. They understand the emotions and some of the challenges college students overcome to earn their degrees and get started in the classroom. Though many things have changed for aspiring teachers over the years. The Ascension Retired Teachers Association has formed a service project aimed at bringing some relief to education majors nearing the end of their college programs. Click here to read the full story.
